What We're About
Updated: Mar 27, 2019
Hello! Anna here. I am so honored that you are reading our blog. I have been inspired by friends and my experience as a mamma to do this since I became a mother in 2017. I am obviously new to motherhood but am learning so much. I thought a lot about what our first blog post would be about. Our birth stories? Bios? Cute pics of our babies? But as I was thinking about the reason why I wanted to blog, I realized that I need to share something very important with you.
The Good News! That's literally what "Gospel" means. This good news I am about to share is the foundation of this blog's content, the foundation of my motherhood, my marriage, my life. I received this news when I was a teenager. I had heard it many times growing up, but never realized how much I needed it until then. When it became real to me, it gave my life freedom and purpose. So here we go.
The Garden Life
There is a God Who has always been, Who is, and Who will always be. He decided to create a universe and in that universe created Earth. He created the atmosphere, clouds, H2O, wind, bark, cherry blossoms, the platypus, rubies, sea horses, and all plants and living creatures, including humans.
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1v27)
He created all this and said to Himself, "Wow, this is good." Humans walked with this God, Who happens to be the God of all, King of kings, and Lord of lords, in a beautiful garden.
They walked in perfect union with this Almighty God. He loved us enough to create us in His image. He made us to be creative, to live in community, and beget humans like He begot Adam and Eve (the first people He created). He made humans to fill and tame the earth with people, cities, gardens, skill and beauty.
The Broken Life
But He gave us a choice to love Him in return. He didn't force the humans He made to do everything He wanted. He let them decide. One day, when faced with a choice to obey God or to do their own thing, they chose their own thing. And so they went against the beautiful design God created us to live in.
Now God is perfect, and this garden was perfect, so He forced them out of His presence so they would not be destroyed. Unfortunately, the sin caused the human race to be cursed. There are consequences to disobedience, of course, but He still loved His people.
Throughout time, people continued to say they would follow Him, but they also continued to turn their backs on Him. He created this law for them to follow, one, to set them apart from the people who did not follow Him, and two, to protect them. He gave them a way to receive forgiveness through sacrifice. People would take advantage of that and sacrifice for forgiveness, but continue to do bad things, like prostitution, murder, child sacrifice, etc.
“I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown. Israel was holy to the Lord, the firstfruits of his harvest. All who ate of it incurred guilt; disaster came upon them, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 2v2-3
The whole chapter of Jeremiah 2 is a great read about the sinfulness of man.
So, of course, their are consequences that they brought on themselves for that. They would get into war, be captured and put into slavery, and other horrible things. But God would always rescue them, tell them they needed to turn away from the bad things they were doing, that He was sending a Messiah to rescue them forever from oppression, and told them to follow His unifying, beautiful design of life. And they would do that and trust in Him for a while, but then turn from Him again to follow other gods and their own desires.
Some of them didn't understand God. Some of them thought all He wanted was sacrifices. Some thought He just had all these rules He wanted them to follow. He was largely misunderstood, so He decided to come down Himself, in the form of a human man, Jesus, to prove His character and love to them, and to invite all people groups to follow Him and to be made right with Him once and for all. This is where the Gospel, the Good News, comes...
The Good News
Jesus! Jesus was a man born in Bethlehem miraculously by a virgin girl. He was pure and holy, the Son of God Himself. He loved people selflessly, spoke truth boldly, and did God's will. He proved God's sacrificial love to the human race. He healed people's diseases, provided for the poor, taught us to love our enemies, and in the end, was brutally murdered in a crucifixion (the most painful and humiliating way to die in that time).
And He did so willingly! So He would be the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of the human race, once and for all. But it didn't end there.
He died and was buried in a tomb. But three days after He died, two women who had walked closely with Him and His disciples went to the tomb and had a crazy encounter with an angel. The angel said . . .
"He is not here, for He has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where He lay." Matthew 28v6
Sure enough, Jesus wasn't there. Jesus had come back to life! He not only became the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, but defeated death itself!
He showed that He wants us to be in a relationship with Him.
He wants us to be reconnected with Him and to walk in union with Him. He showed us that death is not the end of all. It is only the beginning.
He wants us to know Him and understand Him so we can walk in eternity with Him, living in the perfect garden with beautiful fruits, and breathtaking scenery, and perfect pieces of Earth at our fingertips to cultivate it and thrive. With God.
A Restored Life
Have you heard of this beautiful Jesus? Of this beautiful God? He is awesome in power, faithful in love, amazing in glory and majesty. He is compassionate and gracious and kind. He is our mender, our healer, our lover, and friend. He deserves glory and worship. He's a King Who left His perfect heaven to love us, to let Himself be the Sacrifice for our sins.
Do you understand how loved you are?
This is the Good News for you.
And it is for me.
I keep on learning the depth of this Gospel for me, the depth, width, and height of God's love for me, for my family, and for all people in the world. God has set me free to love freely, to love my husband and children selflessly, and to serve others around me through love. A big reason is because I know my identity - LOVED.
(Obviously. Didn't you just read the story of Jesus?)
He has set me free from having to earn love, to earn favor, to earn life and purpose. I have all of that in Jesus. He has captured my heart with this deep love. I have no doubts with Him, but follow His lead. He proved Himself to me in His Word and in life many times. I read His Word, and it brings me life and joy. It is such wisdom that brings me closer to Him and to stand in awe of Who He is.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5v24
My eternity is secure in Him, and so I walk in freedom of the struggles in this world. I am not saying that I live in a perfect bubble and am not affected my the wrong in the world, but I can know confidently that this world is not all there is. There is an eternity of perfection that I have chosen, and it moves me to point others to this love and new identity.
There, of course, is an eternity for those who do not choose Him, too, and that, simply put, is an eternity without Him. That is what I am sure you have heard is called Hell. And I believe in it. I am confident enough in the Love of God that an eternity without Him would be hell to me.
Going back to the beginning, where humans chose their own way of doing things... That's the eternity one will receive if they continue to chose their own way. Why? Because God gave us a choice, to choose Him or to choose something else. That's eternity, one with Him or without. And an eternity with Him only comes by choosing Jesus, the Son of God.
I believe He is the only way.
"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" John 14v6
God Himself became a man, Jesus, to show us Who He is and to offer us freedom and life in Him.
And so we choose Him or we don't. And again, the Good News, the great news, is that we have Him freely. We don't have to perform sacrifices to receive God's forgiveness; we don't have to live earning His favor; we don't have to be afraid that we're too far gone or too broken. We don't have to fear our past, or get "right" before we can be saved. Jesus already offered the sacrifice, for you, before you were even born. It is offered to you right now, and you have that choice. You can choose the identity Loved. We're all broken and destined for life without Him until we choose to believe in Who Jesus is, have faith, and to follow Him. And in my opinion, after all the thousands of years (or millions, who knows really?) He has put up with us, and continued to love us, why would anyone doubt or decline that steadfast and faithful Love?
"Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations," Deuteronomy 7v9, emphasis mine
